“I gave you one more chance and you failed me.” Druidess Cordelia spoke with contempt, no hint of mercy in her look, her face red with anger. “I can’t tell you how disappointed I am in you, how disgusted I am by your behavior. It’s obvious to me that you’ve been meeting your lover—”

”No, madam! I have no lover.”

Cordelia opened her hands wide. “Then why in the name of the Goddess do you sneak out of bed every night?”

Inwardly shaking, Annwn turned away, fighting her tears. A deep chill penetrated her heart . Sorrow and despair churned inside her, a painful amalgam she felt powerless to overcome. Tears stung her eyes; she could only shake her head in silent distress.

“So you have no excuse.”

“No,” she whispered. Tears flowed down her cheeks. How she wanted to explain, tell the druidess of the curse that had followed her for too many years, this evil spell that possessed her.

Even while she hung her head in shame, she vowed she’d find a cure for this evil spell. She had to conquer it, had to! Time, she just needed time!

“You are dismissed,” the druidess said in cold finality. “We can’t keep anyone so lacking in conscience, so devoid of morality. When I think of the care we have given you after your mother entrusted you to us, and this is how you repay us. Oh, I could just weep.”

As I am, Annwn lamented, sobbing. She raised her hand to her face, unable to stop the tears.

“Shall I leave now, Druidess Cordelia?” she asked in a broken voice.

“What do you think?” Her gaze raked her up and down. “Under normal circumstances, when a student who has behaved honorably leaves the hospital, we give her a few silver coins to see her on her way. But that doesn’t apply to you, does it?”

She could only shake her head.

“Does it?”

“No, madam.”

‘Go, then, and I never want to see you again.”
